Institute for the Monuments’ Protection: Report on the inspection of the building JU Prva gimnazija Sarajevo in Ulica Gimnazijska 3 in Sarajevo

The Institute for the Protection of Monuments was approached by JU Prva gimnazija with a request for the issuance of an expert opinion for the ongoing maintenance of the entrance doors at the JU Prva gimnazija Sarajevo building in Ulica Gimnazijska 3 in Sarajevo.

The building in question is part of the construction complex of school buildings from Gimnazijska Street in Sarajevo, which was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, adopted at the session held on 11 March 2011. Protection and rehabilitation measures determined by the Decision on Proclamation are applied to the national monument.

According to the submitted documentation, the works in question relate to the restoration-craft work on the door (a total of three entrance openings, one double door on each).

Based on the inspection of the building on 9 June 2026, the following was determined:

– the double-leaf entrance doors are made of dark stained and varnished wood, with visible damage,
– there are decorative fillings in the lower zones of the doors, and in the upper zones there is glass with metal crosses placed over it. Traces of damage due to age are visible on the glass,
– there are locks on all doors, and a handle on the middle door. Traces of oxidation and wear are visible on the metal locking cylinders,
– the contact zones between the wooden elements of the door, glass and wall surfaces have cracks.

It was concluded that there existed a justified need for restoration and craft repair of the wooden elements of the door, replacement of glass parts, replacement of fittings and re-finishing. The planned works do not have a negative impact on the national monument and are in accordance with the protection measures and general standards for the protection of cultural and historical heritage objects.
