23 April – World Book and Copyright Day

Books are a unique moving magic.
Stephen King

The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports celebrates World Book and Copyright Day, reminding us of the invaluable value of the written word and the responsibility we all share in preserving cultural heritage.

In 1995, UNESCO established April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day, because on that day the memory of Cervantes, Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega is commemorated, which symbolically emphasizes the universal power of literary creativity. With this day, UNESCO wanted to promote reading as the foundation of education and critical thinking, support publishing as a carrier of cultural exchange and ensure the protection of copyright, thus preserving the dignity and recognition of the creative work of writers, translators and publishers.

In an era of rapid technological change, books remain a permanent support and teach us critical thinking, open new horizons and preserve the identity of communities. World Book and Copyright Day is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of reading, of supporting literary creativity and of the obligation to pass on cultural heritage to future generations.

The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports invites citizens to mark this day by reading, but also to ensure that reading does not remain just for one day, but becomes a permanent habit that enriches everyday life. In this way, together we build a culture based on knowledge, respect and freedom of creative expression.

A book is a dream you hold in your hand.
