8 September – International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day, observed on September 8, is an occasion to reflect on the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a key prerequisite for personal development, education, and equal participation in society.

Today, literacy goes beyond the mere ability to read and write. It encompasses reading comprehension, the development of critical thinking, communication skills, access to information, and the ability to navigate the modern digital environment responsibly. In an era of rapid change and constant exposure to vast amounts of diverse information, the ability to understand, evaluate, and use that information responsibly is more important than ever.

Books and reading, libraries, schools, cultural and educational institutions, families, and the media—as well as all individuals and organizations that foster a love for books, learning, and knowledge—play a vital role in cultivating a culture of literacy.

Literacy is also a crucial component of cultural development. Through reading, we gain insight into our own and other cultures, preserve language and cultural heritage, develop creativity and critical thinking, and build a society where knowledge and culture are accessible to all.

The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports recognizes the importance of fostering a culture of reading, library services, and publishing, as well as preserving and promoting linguistic and cultural heritage. Investing in literacy is, therefore, not merely an investment in education—it is an investment in the individual, in culture, in social inclusion, and in the future of our society.

As we mark International Literacy Day, we call for a shared reflection on the importance of books, language, and knowledge, and for the creation of a society in which every child, young person, and adult has the opportunity to learn, read, create, and actively participate in cultural and social life.

For literacy opens the door to knowledge, and knowledge opens the door to opportunities.
