The Hague Convention from 1954 is one of the most important international documents for the protection of cultural heritage during armed conflicts. Bosnia and Herzegovina ratified the Convention and the First Protocol on July 12, 1993, and the Second Protocol from 1999 on May 22, 2009.
What does the Convention protect?
Protection includes monuments, museums, archives, libraries, archaeological sites, but also movable cultural assets such as works of art, manuscripts, books and valuable collections.
Blue shield – a sign of protection
The Convention introduced an international recognition sign – the Blue Shield, which marks cultural property under special protection of international law.
Protection begins in peace
States are obliged to plan in advance the protection of cultural assets, including measures for their protection and evacuation in case of danger.
