Goal of the UNESCO80 initiative
Launched to mark the organization’s 80th anniversary, this roadmap is designed to make UNESCO more resilient, financially sustainable, efficient, and better adapted to contemporary global challenges. The initiative aligns with the broader United Nations effort known as UN80.
UNESCO80 is expected to enhance institutional efficiency and contribute to cost reductions and more efficient resource utilization over time. Where specific measures—such as infrastructure modernization and digital transformation—require investment, the Secretariat will submit relevant proposals to the Executive Board for consideration, accompanied by full details regarding the associated financial implications.

The introduction of a centralized digital platform and standardized briefings will significantly facilitate the work of the State Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Cooperation with UNESCO, as well as the Permanent Delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to UNESCO in Paris.
2. Review of field offices and mandates (Pillar II) – new funding models
UNESCO’s opening up to innovative green and climate funds creates an opportunity for Bosnia and Herzegovina to apply for resources dedicated to the protection of natural heritage and biodiversity—for instance, for the Perućica primeval forest and protected caves and rivers.
- Human resources and the role of youth (Pillar III and UN80)
Geographical balance: Pillars I and III insist on stricter adherence to geographical balance in recruitment for the UNESCO Secretariat. This opens up opportunities for better representation of experts, scientists, and administrators from Bosnia and Herzegovina within UNESCO’s own structure in Paris.
Youth engagement: The reform emphasizes the importance of greater youth involvement in UNESCO’s work and processes.
