23 August – International Day of Folklore

Folklore is the heart of a people—a rhythm that connects us across time.

International Folklore Day, observed on August 23, reminds us of the richness of traditional heritage and the power of cultural expression that unites communities. Through dance, song, customs, and folk costumes, folklore preserves a people’s identity and transmits the values that shape our cultural diversity.

The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports proudly highlights the importance of preserving folklore traditions, which are an integral part of the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through initiatives such as the “Culture Promenade” (Šetnica kulture), folklore is promoted as a vibrant and dynamic segment of cultural life, accessible to citizens of all generations. As part of the “Culture Promenade” programs—held every Wednesday in front of the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports—folklore steps out of concert halls and museums to become part of the everyday urban landscape, reminding us of tradition’s role in offering a glimpse into the past and providing inspiration for the future.

By marking International Folklore Day, the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports reaffirms its enduring support for the preservation and development of cultural heritage, emphasizing that folklore has transcended the form of pure artistic expression to become a bridge connecting people, communities, and generations.

In preserving folklore, we preserve ourselves, for our past, present, and future live on within its steps and melodies.
