Report on the inspection of the Ferhadija Mosque in Sarajevo

The Institute for the Protection of Monuments was approached by the Majlis of the Islamic Community of Sarajevo with a request to issue an expert opinion for the installation of protective fabric on the interior walls of the Ferhadija Mosque in Sarajevo.

The architectural ensemble – Ferhadija Mosque (Ferhad-beg’s Mosque) with the harem in Sarajevo was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina at its session held from 2 to 8 November 2004. The national monument is subject to the protection and rehabilitation measures established by the Decision on the declaration.

According to the submitted documentation, the works in question relate to the installation of protective fabric on the interior walls, in two positions: above the mihrab and on the part of the wall to the left of the mihrab. It is proposed to install mesh fabric in two positions with a total area of approximately 10 m2 (2 x 5 m2). It is planned to drill a total of eight smaller holes in the wall into which steel hooks will be installed, to which steel ropes would be attached, four in total, approximately 12 m long. The mesh fabric is attached to the steel ropes.

Based on the inspection of the building carried out on 20 May 2026, the following was noted:

– inside the mosque (on the dome, the wall above the mihrab and part of the wall to the left of the mihrab), cracks have appeared from which parts of the plaster are falling off, which poses a danger to worshipers in the prayer space,
– the proposed intervention is justified because it is set as a temporary solution whose sole aim is to protect the prayer space,
– it is necessary to take care not to damage the painted surfaces of the walls when drilling holes for the steel hooks,
– it is also important to prepare project documentation for the structural repair of cracks in the walls, on the basis of which the works will be carried out.

It was concluded that the planned works can be carried out, are justified and do not have a negative impact on the national monument.
