Institute for the Monuments’ Protection: Report on the expert conservation supervision of the works on the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Vareš

An inspection of the state of conservation and restoration works on the ongoing maintenance of the facade of the parish church of St. Mihovil Arkandjela in Vares, carried out on April 16, 2026, it was determined that the works on the eastern and northern facades were completed. Preparatory work is currently being carried out on the plastering of the unstable parts of the western facade. Compared to the condition before the completion of the works on the previous two facades, the condition of the western side is much worse.

The Institute for the Protection of Monuments has drawn up plans for the canopy over the entrance on the western facade (two variants). After analyzing the proposed solutions, the variant of the assembly-dismantling canopy was accepted. The materials that would be used to make the canopy are a combination of steel and glass, which is acceptable from the point of view of protecting objects of cultural and historical heritage.

It has been established that the works are being carried out with quality, in accordance with the project documentation and the given guidelines, as well as the expected dynamics.

Professional conservation supervision of works in front of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments is performed by Lamija Abdijević, M.Sc., B.Sc.Arch. and MA Dolores Janko, Dipl.ing.arch., expert advisor for architectural and archaeological heritage.
