21 May – The World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Since 2002, 21 May has been celebrated worldwide as the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, on the basis of the General Declaration on Cultural Diversity adopted by the UNESCO General Assembly.

The main objective of this international document is to help countries to create conditions for dialogue between cultures and civilisations in their own environments, respecting and promoting cultural diversity, in globalisation circumstances.

The Convention on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage from 2003 and the Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Content from 2005 are the last of the seven international conventions by which UNESCO promotes and strengthens cultural diversity in the world. By encouraging the development of diverse world cultures, the international community wants to prevent the unified development of the world. It represents the starting-point for coexistence and inclusion of all people and is the basis for life in a multicultural world. It is a significant factor in development, and its respect is also respect for human rights.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a signatory to all seven UNESCO conventions, which have been implemented in our country with due care and in full compliance with the legislative and legal framework.
