World Day of the Romani Language – Preserving and Promoting Cultural Diversity

Today, 5 November, the World Day of the Romani Language is celebrated that is dedicated to the preservation, development, and promotion of the Romani language as an important part of global cultural and linguistic heritage. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding languages that represent the identity and richness of the Roma community around the world.

The Romani language, which belongs to the Indo-Aryan group of languages, is spoken by more than three million Roma across various parts of Europe and the world. It encompasses numerous dialects, reflecting its diversity and historical breadth, as well as the need for its preservation through education, culture, and media.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in other countries of the region, the Romani language holds a special place in preserving the cultural identity of the Roma. Cultural institutions, educational establishments, and civil society organisations contribute to the affirmation of the Romani language and traditions through various activities.

The celebration of the World Day of the Romani Language is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of respecting linguistic and cultural diversity and on our shared responsibility to preserve intangible cultural heritage.
