Singing to the accompaniment of the gusle is one of the most important and widespread forms of folk music in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are numerous records about the gusle and singing to the accompaniment of the gusle, created over the past centuries.

The gusle singers are members of all social classes, of different ages, education and interests. Talented gusle singers, whose interpretation is based on knowledge acquired through oral tradition and many years of experience, stood out in particular. Narrative songs belonging to the traditional or new repertoire based on current themes were always performed with the gusle. The performance begins with an instrumental introduction on the gusle, followed by singing.

Older gusle singers have partially maintained the continuity of traditional interpretation, whereas the playing of younger gusle singers is closer to tempered, containing numerous stylistic changes. Regardless of the method of interpretation, the gusle and gusle singers are still very popular today.
