The Institute for the Monuments’ Protection was approached by the Serbian Orthodox Church Municipality of Sarajevo with a request to issue an expert opinion for the performance of ongoing maintenance work on the parish apartment and porch within the Old Orthodox Church (Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel) in Sarajevo.

The building complex – the Old Orthodox Church (Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel) in Sarajevo was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was adopted at the session held from 4 to 11 September 2006. The national monument consists of a church, a church yard, a museum building, an enclosure wall, an entrance gate, a parish house and movable heritage. Protection measures established by the Law on the Implementation of Decisions of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments, established in accordance with Annex 8 of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, are applied to the national monument.

According to the submitted documentation, the works refer to roofing works on the parish apartment and works on the east, north and west porches.

Based on the inspection of the facility on March 16, 2026, the following was noted:

– the roof tiles covering the buildings are worn out and damaged in some places, it is planned to install new roof tiles;
– it is planned to check the condition of the wooden roof structure and replace approx. 25% of the damaged and dilapidated structure with a new one made of oak;
– damage is visible on the pillars of the porch, which are made of oak;
– horizontal and vertical gutters are also in bad condition;

It was concluded that the planned works are justified and that the proposed intervention is in accordance with the protection measures and general standards for the protection of objects of cultural and historical heritage.
