The Department for Urban Planning, Housing and Communal Affairs of the City of Sarajevo approached the Institute for the Protection of Monuments with a request to issue an expert opinion for the ongoing maintenance works of the fountain on the square of the Sarajevo Railway Station.
The historical building, the Sarajevo Railway Station with a square, was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, adopted at the session held on 26 April 2018. The national monument is subject to protection measures set out in the Law on the Implementation of Decisions of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments, established in accordance with Annex 8 of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
According to the submitted documentation, the works in question relate to the creation of eight decorative sculptures in the shape of frogs, cleaning, rehabilitation and replacement of the stone slabs of the fountain, repair of the asphalt around the fountain, creation of a new stone slab with the name of the square, and rehabilitation of electrical installations and installation of LED lighting.
Based on the inspection of the site on 25 February 2026, the following was noted:
− in general, the fountain is in poor condition, primarily due to lack of maintenance,
− minor damage and patina were observed on most of the stone slabs of the fountain, while more serious damage is visible on some,
− there are a lot of weeds and vegetation around the fountain,
− decorative sculptures in the shape of frogs, which are listed in the request, are missing, − the stone slab with the inscription is in poor condition.
It was concluded that the planned works do not have a negative impact on the national monument and that they are in line with the protection measures and general standards for the protection of cultural and historical heritage objects.
