Report from the field visit to the Husejnija Mosque in Gradačac

On 27 February 2026, an inspection was carried out of the completed conservation and restoration works on the wall decorations in the interior of the Husejnija Mosque in Gradačac.

The architectural ensemble of the Husejnija (Husein-captain Gradaščević) Mosque in Gradačac is a protected national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, proclaimed by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina at its session held from 2 to 8 November 2004. The national monument is subject to protection and rehabilitation measures established by the Law on the Implementation of Decisions of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments Established under Annex 8 of the General Peace Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Restoration works carried out on the severely damaged painted wall surfaces and furnishings of the mosque have been completed.

The result of the fire, which was set at the end of 2023, was severe damage to the wall decorations in the form of completely blackened surfaces from soot, flaking and complete falling off of the plaster. The plaster suffered the most on the wall behind the mimber, under the trompi near the stairs of the mahfil and the ground part of the wall behind the mahfil. The fire also engulfed wooden furniture, especially mimber and mahfil, the surface of which, in some places, was damaged to a depth of 25 mm.

The intervention included cleaning (dry and wet), consolidation and retouching. The works were carried out from the crown of the dome through the tambourine and pandatif towards the lower zones.

In this way, consolidated surfaces can last for a long period of time with regular and adequate maintenance.

The works were carried out by Nihad Čengić, the conservator.
