International Literacy Day – 8 September

International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on 8 September, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of literacy for individuals and society.

UNESCO proclaimed this day in 1966, and it was first celebrated in 1967.

Literacy is considered a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. Although great strides have been made in increasing the number of literate people in the world, UNESCO continues to point out the fact that millions of children, young people and adults do not have basic reading and writing skills. Each year, this day carries a special theme that highlights a current challenge – from digital literacy, through inclusive education, to adult education.

In short: International Literacy Day reminds us that the right to education and literacy are essential for the development of society, poverty reduction and active participation in the community.
