On Thursday, 26 March 2026, a lecture titled “The Future of Archaeological Research in the Digital Age” was held at the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports, organized by this ministry and the Institute for the Protection of Monuments.
Before the start of the lecture, the Federal Minister of Culture and Sports, Sanja Vlaisavljević, addressed the audience, pointing out that the lectures and panels, which are realized along with meetings and exchange of experiences, are the mission of the Ministry and the Institute for the Protection of Monuments.
The Director of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, Robert Stergar, emphasized that the knowledge, which has been collected over the years and which is acquired at archaeological sites, is crucial to adequately interpret what technology and digital tools show.
The lecture was moderated by an employee of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, Martina Marinčić, and the lecturers were: prof. Dr. Adnan Kaljanac, assistant professor Dr. Jesenko Hadžihasanović and Prof. Dr. Zlatan Filipović.
The lecture showed how the way of studying and preserving cultural heritage is changing. Special emphasis is placed on the LiDAR technique, which enables the discovery and mapping of archaeological sites by laser scanning, then the rover and total station, instruments that provide precise measurements on the ground and help document the site, and VR/AR technology, which allows researchers and visitors to experience archaeological sites in a virtual and augmented environment.
The lecture was attended by numerous guests: representatives of cantonal institutes for the protection of cultural and historical heritage, professors and archaeologists, as well as representatives of numerous associations and students.
