Institute for Monuments’ Protection: Inspection of the condition of the residential building at Kalemova Street 5 in Sarajevo

The Institute for Monuments’ Protection was approached by the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning with a request to issue an expert opinion on the “Main Project for the Rehabilitation of the Villa Corn Residential Building at 5 Kalemova Street in Sarajevo”.

The object in question is located within the Building Complex – Crni Vrh Housing Complex in Sarajevo, which was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, adopted at the session held from March 26 to 28, 2012. The national monument consists of residential buildings with associated green areas created during the period between the two world wars, as well as the area where the interpolated buildings were incorporated into the original regulatory plan after the Second World War. Protection measures established by the Law on the Implementation of Decisions of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments, established in accordance with Annex 8 of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, are applied to the national monument.

The project documentation foresees the removal of the existing building and the rehabilitation of the building in accordance with the prescribed protection measures.

On 24 March 2026, an inspection of the condition of the building in question was carried out and the following was noted:

-the building has S+P+1 floors,
-most of the building is devastated, only the remains of the roof structure are visible, the carpentry is destroyed,
-the building has probably been exposed to atmospheric influences (rain, snow, wind) and deterioration for a long period of time,
-the building’s condition is bad, so the proposal for its removal is justified.
