Conservation and restoration works on the Ali Pasha Mosque in Sarajevo are being carried out through the Waqf Directorate of Bosnia and Herzegovina and are funded by the General Directorate of Foundations of the Republic of Turkey.
The works are being executed by the company “Fajić” d.o.o. Mostar, based on project documentation prepared by the “URBING” d.o.o. Sarajevo studio and the expert opinion of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments.
The architectural complex comprising the “Ali Pasha Mosque with its harem” in Sarajevo was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in January 2005. Protection and rehabilitation measures established by the Decision on Designation apply to the national monument.
According to the project documentation, the works encompass the rehabilitation of all exterior wall surfaces—including the portico and minaret—as well as interior wall surfaces and furnishings (mihrab, mahfil, and minbar), along with work in the mosque’s harem (on the turbe mausoleum, public fountain, and tombstones).
Work is currently underway to remove lime coatings down to the oldest layer on all interior walls (flat wall surfaces, the dome, arches, and pendentives) and furnishings (mihrab, mahfil, and minbar), as well as to remove existing mortar joints from the exterior walls. This will be followed by the repair of damage to the dome and walls through crack filling, injection, and the application of carbon fiber fabric and laminates. It was concluded that the works are being carried out in accordance with the project documentation, the principles and standards for the protection of cultural and historical heritage sites, and the established work schedule.
