Institute for the Protection of Monuments: Report on Conservation and Restoration Works at the Old Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Vareš

On 21 October 2026, a working meeting was held in Vareš regarding the execution of routine maintenance work on the roof of the old Church of St. Michael the Archangel. In addition to the investor/owner of the structure, the meeting was attended by representatives of the contractor, “Neimari” d.o.o. Sarajevo, and representatives of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, which is responsible for professional conservation supervision.

It was agreed at the meeting that work would commence on Monday, October 26, 2026, weather permitting.

The conservation and restoration works will include the replacement of the existing, dilapidated roof covering—specifically, the wooden shingles. According to the project documentation titled “Old Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Vareš – Roof Routine Maintenance Project,” prepared by the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, the new shingles must be hand-cut, of first-class quality, and seasoned (dried) for at least one year.

An inspection of the sample of shingles to be used confirmed that they meet all the specified requirements. A section of the roof, uncovered by the contractor to assess the condition of the substructure, was also examined; it was determined that the substructure also requires replacement.
