Institute for Monuments’ Protection: Inspection of the Gazi Husrev Bey (Kuršumlija) madrasa in Sarajevo

The Institute for Monuments Protection was addressed by the Gazi Husrev-beg foundation in Sarajevo with a request to issue an expert opinion on the “Elaborate on the ongoing maintenance of the Kuršumlija madrasa”.

The building complex of Gazi Husrev-beg madrasa with the site and remains of Hanikah in Sarajevo was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the session held from September 4 to 11, 2006. The protection measures established by the Decision on Proclamation as a National Monument are applied to the national monument.

According to the submitted documentation, the subject works refer to interventions in the interior of the madrasa. The planned works can be considered ongoing maintenance works because they do not envisage construction work on load-bearing structures or changes to the basic spatial organization of the facility.

Based on the inspection of the facility on 18 August 2026, the following was noted:

in some places of the wall surfaces, damage to the plaster is visible, which needs to be repaired, after which the painting work will be carried out,
the testing of electrical installations during the works and the replacement of worn-out ones are planned,
it is planned to replace all dilapidated lighting fixtures with new ones that will match the purpose of the building.
It was concluded that the planned works are justified, that they do not have a negative impact on the national monument, and that they are in accordance with the protection measures and general standards for the protection of objects of cultural and historical heritage.
