25 May – World Football Day

Football is more than a game – it is a universal language that connects people.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 25 May as World Football Day, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament, held in Paris in 1924.

Football is the most popular game in the world, played on streets, fields, stadiums and schoolyards. It is a universal language that connects people of different cultures, languages and traditions. The values that football promotes – friendship, teamwork, fair play and tolerance – make it a powerful tool for building peace, solidarity and togetherness. It is no coincidence that football is often said to be “the most important side hustle in the world”, because it is through it that people find joy, passion and a sense of belonging.

As part of the celebration of World Football Day, the United Nations reminds us that this game is not just a competition, but also a value that transcends borders and connects people around the world.

The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports proudly joins in celebrating World Football Day. Football in Bosnia and Herzegovina has a special place in the life of the community – from children’s playgrounds to large stadiums – and represents a strong symbol of togetherness and sportsmanship. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of investing in sports infrastructure, encouraging young people to play football and preserving the values that this game carries.

World Football Day is an opportunity to remind ourselves that football is not just a game, but also a force that connects people, builds friendships and promotes tolerance.
