The immortality of a people lies in its language.
Chingiz Aitmatov, writer
World Romani Language Day is observed on 5 November with the aim of promoting, preserving, and affirming the Romani language—an essential component of the cultural identity, historical heritage, and traditions of the Romani people.
The Romani language represents an invaluable cultural treasure; its values are passed down from generation to generation, safeguarding the collective memory, customs, oral literature, music, and traditions of the Romani community. Its preservation and development are significant not only for the Romani people but for society as a whole, as linguistic diversity serves as a cornerstone of cultural pluralism and mutual understanding.
Marking this date provides an opportunity to further highlight the importance of protecting linguistic rights, enhancing educational opportunities in the Romani language, and fostering its study and presence within public and cultural life.
The Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports recognizes the importance of preserving cultural and linguistic diversity, affirming the cultural contributions of national minorities, and nurturing values that help build an open and inclusive society.
On the occasion of World Romani Language Day, we extend our support to all initiatives aimed at preserving, promoting, and affirming the Romani language—reminding us that every language serves as a unique means of expressing the identity, culture, and experiences of a people.
Like any language, the Romani language embodies history, identity, and a sense of belonging.
